LONG FORMS. Mike Singletary provides the opening and close in a 30-minute film dealing with the death of a child or a sibling. The non-profit Compassionate Friends funded the film with a grant from the Ronald McDonald Foundation. Directed by John Hynd and produced by Sheri Hughes of A&G, the picture is aimed at children 12 to 18 years old. With a dub order of 700, “Compassionate Friends” will reach community, school and church audiences. Singletary, incidentally, lost his brother, Grady, in a car accident.

Genesis’ Jim White is directing a sexual harassment and anti-racism picture for United Airlines. Second City comics appear in six role-playing scenarios and show the corporate way to handle the problems. Lee Reilly wrote the script, Leann Murphy, who returned to Genesis after four months of freelancing as a P.A….Purdue’s Krannert graduate school of management assigned Sam Ventura of Ventura-Petersen to direct and lens an 11-minute recruitment film aimed at accepted applicants who haven’t firmly decided which school they will attend…When Abbott Labs hit $1 billion in sales, it commissioned Butler Productions to produce a 15-minute celebratory film to be shown to all 600-employees-and to include as many of those employees as possible, documentary style. Kier Cline directed and shot, Connie Butler produced.

ON THE SPOT. First piece of business for Tom Finerty’s Ed is a spot for the Fifth Third Bancorp, through Northlich, Stolley & Lawarre of Cincinnati…Norm Lippert went to Miami for a three-day shoot for Famous Footwear, filming in 15 locations. Agency is Madison’s Hiebing Group…A new Cap’n Crunch cereal spot to bow mid-March was directed at Crossroads by Greg Hoey, for Bayer Bess Vanderwarker CD Gary Rosenbaum and producer Meredith Witkin…For McCann-Erickson, Detroit, director-cameraman Ari Golan filmed an image spot for GM-UAW promoting pride in workmanship and quality of the vehicle, for airing regionally in Indiana and Missouri where GM has plants…Breaking in April will be a Reese’s candy commercial directed by David Deahl for Ogilvy & Mather, New York.
